Anita Lawrenz Tirado: A Life at the Crossroads of Cultures and Political Upheaval in the 20th Century

27. November 2024 – 18:00 - 19:30 Uhr

This lecture explores the extraordinary life of Anita Lawrenz Tirado, a Mexican of German descent, whose experiences reflect the historical and political forces of the early 20th century. As the eldest daughter in her family, Anita navigated migration to Germany, education under the Nazi regime, auxiliary service in the Luftwaffe, and later endured Soviet imprisonment and exile to the remote village of Cherlak in Siberia.

Drawing on unique archival materials and personal letters preserved by her niece, Gabriela Cortes, this lecture examines key episodes in Tirado’s life: her survival amid cultural and political isolation, her adaptation to life within the Soviet camp system, and her eventual return to Mexico. Her story not only offers insight into the personal impact of political repression but also serves as a valuable resource for exhibitions, theater projects, and educational programs that seek to illuminate the transnational dimensions of 20th-century history.

The Sachsenhausen Memorial project was and is funded by the Federal Foundation for the Study of the Communist Dictatorship in Germany and the North-East Institute (Institute for Culture and History of the Germans in North-East Europe - IKGN e. V.) in Lüneburg.

Vera Yarilina is a researcher, museum curator, and educator. She is curator of educational projects at Zukunft Memorial and the exhibition "To Leave or To Stay“.
