General tours

On a guided tour of the Sachsenhausen Memorial, visitors are given an overview of the history of Sachsenhausen concentration camp, of Soviet Special Camp No. 7/No. 1 and of the Memorial itself. Showing the remains of buildings and other traces that have been left behind, the guide provides an insight into how the camp was built and expanded, the conditions under which the inmates were kept and what their day-to-day lives were like between forced labour and murder actions. The reasons victims were persecuted and their various experiences, as well as the acts of the perpetrators, are presented taking objects in the exhibitions as examples. The topics covered in the general tour include not just the role of Sachsenhausen concentration camp in the concentration camp system, but also the Soviet special camp and the way the history of the camps has been dealt with since 1950.

Themed tours

By arrangement, tours can be offered with a specific thematic focus, such as on individual groups of inmates or on the Soviet Special Camp No. 7/No. 1.

“Self-guided tours”

Led by a member of the Memorial’s educational service team, young people in small groups develop the various stations of a guided tour themselves. For this they are provided with guidance and materials for their research into the exhibitions. Then, taking a tour together, they present to each other exhibits and information relating to the history of the historic site. The “self-guided tour” lasts at least four hours.
