The Sachsenhausen Memorial mourns the death of Dimitris Efthymiadis

01. February 2023

The Sachsenhausen Memorial mourns the death of concentration camp survivor Dimitris Efthymiadis, who died in Athena on 17 January 2023 at the age of 97.

Efthymiadis, born in Thessaloniki in 1926, was first deported to Neuengamme concentration camp after his arrest in Thessaloniki in 1944 and then to Sachsenhausen concentration camp in July 1944. He had to perform forced labour in an external commando to remove rubble in Berlin.

In the course of the evacuation of the camp, he was sent on a death march. Severely weakened, he experienced liberation at the beginning of May 1945. After a long stay in a hospital, he returned to Greece via Yugoslavia. Here he studied law and later became a prosecutor general at the Areopagus, the Greek Supreme Court. He lived in Athens.
